Sherman’s Postcards: catalog

The card on the left has a production number that indicates a date of 1917. While the production number of the card on the right dates the card to 1925. Sherman's opened as a dance hall in 1921.
"Sherman's Store, Caroga Lake, N.Y." (DG) This divided back card which must date from 1907 or later is somewhat erroneously identified as "Sherman's Store." The original structure had been built by Frank Sherman in 1894. He used it as a grocery store, post office, and residence. But in May 1904, he leased this building to George Fort who converted it into a popular hotel which operated until it burnt in 1936.

"Fine Boating W. Caroga Lake, NY 32," real photo postcard. This card is the source for the following card. For some reason, launch was eliminated in the Teich card.
"21 Fine Boating, West Caroga Lake, N.Y.," Back is damaged, but clearly a Hughes published and Teich printed card. On the basis of what remains, this is an early card. The Teich archives have two cards that would qualify: A80513? 1919 Harbors and docks; A86136 1921 Harbors Docks. What remains of the back is consistent with cards produced in 1921.

"Sherman's Dancing and Bathing Beach, West Caroga Lake, Adirondack Mts., N.Y. 36," Chas W. Hughes publisher; Teich printer. Production number damaged. The number "36" links this to the previous card datable to 1922. The card documents the addition of a wing onto the original building. The card can be identified as
number 91820: "Sherman's Dancing and Bathing Beach" in the Teich inventory. Postmark: 1925. The postcard rate was raised to two cents on April 15, 1925. It reverted to 1 cent on July 1, 1928.

The tower on the right was a ride that is called the Giant Whirl which had swings attached to chains. The water slide has been added. This series of cards is the first to show the development of a substantial amusement park.

"Custer Cars at Sherman's, Caroga Lake, N.Y. 1," C.W. Hughes publisher. Teich printer. Production number: 4A-H1573 (1934). Postmark: 1936 (Saint Johnsville). About 1925 Levitt Custer had developed a battery operated Custer Amusement Park Car. In the 1930s Custer patented the Custer Car meant for the public road. Available with a gasoline motor or battery-operated, the car came with an unusual type of transmission: The driver moved the steering handle forward or backward, and the car would move in that direction.
